Hope 08: Manx Team

Jan Kirkham : Coastal Footprints
Geographically placed at the hub of the British Isles, the Manx people are blessed to live in a truly beautiful Island. In contrast, stress and isolation are two detrimental factors of 21st century living which have a debilitating impact on the lives of people of all ages in our communities. As a Hope08 initiative for the Bank Holiday weekend, Manx PrayerNet www.prayernet.org.im will be promoting four beautiful Manx coastal walks (which will be competently led), to encourage people of all ages to join family and friends to explore and enjoy nature (de-stressing) whilst socialising and having fun (developing community). The Manx PrayerNet ‘Coastal Footprints’ leaflet not only emphasises the health benefits of walking but also promotes the use of a ‘Prayer of Blessing’ asking the Holy Spirit to heal the hearts of the Manx, British and International people of today’s world. The nine walks being promoted throughout 2008 should bring health and enjoyment to residents and visitors alike whilst encouraging everyone to pursue their personal relationship with The Lord, through appreciating His creation and enjoying good company.

Di Marchment : Stewardship - Money
This organisation is committed to helping people stay in control of money, avoid money worries and find financial freedom to give generously. It does this by promoting the Biblical perspective on money, helping people to stay in control of money and providing guidance to those in debt.

This UK based organisation provides training and resources to local communities through the work of their accredited volunteers. As a Hope08 initiative, Stewardship have promoted a series of seminars throughout the British Isles on 'How can the church help people in debt.' Practical solutions to managing debt are suggested through establishing debt advice centres, recruiting  Stewardship volunteers and establishing Church Money Ministry which will be backed up by the red2black campaign www.stewardship.org.uk/red2black which provides free resources and the promotion of 29th June 2008 as designated 'Make it a Red2Black’ Sunday.

As our locally based volunteer, I invited a UK
Stewardship speaker to lead seminars in March and several Anglican, Baptist and Elim church members have now offered to be volunteers. A number of talks have been given to community groups and more people are being reached with one to one help. In May and June 2008, Stewardship will commence training Island volunteers as Personal Budget Coaches to achieve an Island wide ‘Money Ministry’ which will be available to all Manx residents with the result of helping to free people from the debilitating burden of debt.

Pastor John Powell : Youth Project
We took youngsters from Manchester and brought them to the wilds of desolate ‘Eairy Cushlin’ to teach them about “Community.” They had struggled in the city to see their community,  understand that they could be used to change their world and had not recognised the vital importance of team work. They enjoyed hikes and ‘helping hands work,’ (beach cleaning, clean team & charity work for 26hrs) and left the Island transformed being able to see their world more clearly, recognising the team around them and being equipped with an action plan to “adopt” a part of their own local community so becoming carriers of Hope to their local community.

Rachel Price : Bank Holiday Weekend
We have instigated a 6 week card making course and are running a ‘Computers for Beginners’ course. Over the Bank Holiday weekend we plan to serve free tea and coffee to shoppers, do a free car wash and have a free concert for youth of the town with the band night on the Saturday. We will be also providing entertainment in the local park on the Monday afternoon as we take the church onto the streets with contemporary Christian music. The band are also making a CD as a give away to young people of the community and offering a Christmas tour to any church or youth group who would like them to play.
